Prices At The Pump Reach Five-Year Peak, AAA Says

Motorists are seeing no relief at the pump as gas prices have reached a five-year peak, according to AAA.

At a time when gas prices are expected to drop as the industry switches from an eco-friendly blend during the peak of summer to a less expensive winter blend, motorists are instead seeing record high prices due to supply demands.

The average price of gas per gallon sits at $2.88 nationally. That is the most expensive for the beginning of October since 2014. The average is four cents more than a month ago and 32 cents more than a year ago nationally.

The tristate area remains among the most expensive in the country, with Connecticut coming in at an average of $3.02 per gallon and New Yorkers averaging $2.99 per gallon.

Westchester and Rockland counties rank among the nation’s most expensive gas, at an average of $3.20 per gallon, narrowly ahead of Putnam ($3.09), Fairfield ($3.01), Dutchess and Orange ($3.00) counties.

“The last quarter of the year has kicked off with gas prices that feel more like summer than fall,” AAA spokesperson Jeanette Casselano stated. “This time of year, motorists are accustomed to seeing prices drop steadily, but due to continued global supply and demand concerns as well as very expensive summertime crude oil prices, motorists are not seeing relief at the pump.”
